Instructions

1. Turn everyday routines into meaningful one-to-one correspondence
activities by following these steps.
2. Identify a routine where counting is involved. For example, at snack time,
each child at a table needs a napkin. Choose a child from the table to be in
charge of distributing them.
3. Model for the class how to count how many napkins will be needed by
touching the back of each chair where a child is sitting, and counting out
loud.
4. Ask the children to tell you how many napkins are needed. Slowly count
them out one by one and give them to the child. If the child has counted
incorrectly, do not correct him right away; instead, see if he can realize his
mistake as he passes out the napkins.
5. This can be a brainstorming activity for the children. Why are there napkins
left over? Why were there not enough napkins? How many more or less do
you need?
More to do Use this idea whenever you need to pass out an item. Make sure everyone has
an opportunity to count.
