Materials

collection of beanbag toy animals

paper shape mats (one for each child)

Instructions

Create a shape mat as follows: Draw a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle
on a sheet of paper, filling the page with the four shapes. Make one copy of
the mat for each child.
What to Do
1. Give each child a beanbag
animal and a shape mat.
2. Ask the children to place their
animals next to their mats.
3. Give specific directions to the
children, such as "Make your
animal sit on the circle," "Help
your animal hop on the square,"
"Make your animal lie across the
rectangle," or "Help your animal dance on the triangle."
4. After giving the children several directions for what to do with their animals,
challenge the children to take turns calling out specific direction shapes for the
animals to follow.
5. Play until the animals have moved several times on the different shapes.

l Always keep a collection of beanbag toy animals on hand. Use them for spur
of the moment activities.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children place their beanbag animals on the correct shapes?
l Take note of which children may need to improve their listening or shaperecognition
skills and work with these children at a later time.
