Instructions

1. On the first day, cut an egg carton in half lengthwise and poke two holes in one end. Help the child pull a pipe cleaner through the holes to make the antenna. Then the child paints her egg carton caterpillar. Children may want to name their caterpillars.

2. On the second day, the child can wrap the caterpillar up in a paper towel for a cocoon. The child can paint a large butterfly shape on the same day on butcher paper and cut it out.

3. On the following day, the children get to take their caterpillars out of the cocoon and glue them onto the butterfly shape, so that they are transformed into butterflies. You may need to tape the wings on as the glue dries or put a weight on the egg carton to hold it down. When the butterflies are dry, the children make them swirl through the air.More to doMovement: Watch a caterpillar change into a moth or butterfly. Act out being a tiny egg, then crawling around as a caterpillar, spinning a cocoon and finally flying with wings.
