Materials
- Various kinds of string in different colors, cut in 8" (20 cm) lengths
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
What to do
1. Invite the children to choose a few different pieces of string and arrange them on their paper in a design. They may cut the string in different lengths, if they choose.
2. When they are ready, help the children squeeze glue on their paper in a thin line, then lay the string in the glue.
3. Set the papers aside to dry.
4. When the glue is dry, have the children show their designs to the other children, inviting them to look and touch.
More to do
- Art: Substitute fabric for the construction paper, adding another texture to the finished product. Thread various materials such as beads, wooden spools, and pompoms onto yarn or string and compare their textures.
- Outdoors: Bring a ball of string onto the playground and create giant string art; trace the contour of the string art with sidewalk chalk or hop and skip in the string shapes you create.
