1. Make sure each child wears an apron or art smock for this messy activity.
2. Give each child a large sheet of aluminum foil.
3. Let the children mark all over their aluminum foil with permanent markers.
(Water-based markers will not work; the ink will not adhere to the foil.)
Encourage the children to draw pictures or fancy designs and color them in.
4. After the children have colored to their satisfaction, ask them to roll and
crinkle the foil.
5. Help them unroll and straighten out the foil. Wrinkles and crinkled areas
should remain.
6. Put out glitter, confetti, small beads, sequins, and glue. Encourage the
children to embellish their foil artwork as desired. Comment positively on the
children's works of art as they take shape. Notice the colors the children are
using, the shapes they are making on the paper, and their use of positive and
negative space on the foil. Encourage children to talk with each other as they
work on their individual art.
7. Lay the foil designs flat to dry.
8. Encourage the children to dictate a description of their artwork. Ask leading
questions such as, "What were you thinking when you added confetti to your
artwork?" Let the children tell you any special meaning they have put into
their artwork. Print their statements on a note card.
9. Encourage the children to notice what happens when two or three colors
intersect on the foil. Talk about primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.
10. Post the artwork and descriptive statements for all to see and enjoy.
