Instructions

Instead of telling the children "Shhhh" when you want them to quiet down,
try using these alternatives:
* "Give me five": Stop, eyes on me, be quiet, listen, raise your hand.
* Count down: "5-4-3-2-1, listen."
* Say, "Freeze like a Popsicle!"
* Use snap or clap patterns (begins a snap-clap rhythm, children follow)
* Use a STOP hand signal.
* Say a nonsense word.
* Use the peace sign (V)
* Sing, "Are you listening?" Children respond, "Yes, I am."
* Use chimes
* Use a large hourglass or egg timer.
* Strike a piano key, pluck a string, use a tuning fork, use a xylophone.
* Use the American Sign Language sign for "quiet."
* Raise a finger to closed lips.
