Materials

Fabric scraps (about 13 different fabric pieces) scissors red felt sewing machine capable of making zigzag stitch 26 pictures (one for each letter of the alphabet) oak tag rubber cement laminator felt flannel board

Instructions

1. Cut out 3" uppercase letters from fabric scraps. Each fabric scrap may be used to make two different letters.

2. Cut red felt into 26 pieces approximately 3 1/2 " x 4" each.

3. Applique each letter to a piece of red felt using a zigzag stitch on a sewing machine.

4. Locate 26 cute, colored pictures of objects beginning with each letter of the alphabet.

5. Glue the pictures to oak tag using rubber cement. Cut around each oak tag-backed picture so that each picture is approximately 3 1/4 " x 3 3/4 ".

6. Laminate the pictures for durability.

7. Prepare for flannel board use by backing the pictures with felt using rubber cement.

8. To do the activity, the child matches each letter with a picture that has the same beginning sound on the flannel board.

9. This fun activity is great for reinforcing initial sound recognition.Tip: If your flannel board is not large enough, put out only half of the activity at a time.
