Materials
Sidewalk chalk sidewalk or large outdoor surface beanbag
Instructions
1. Help the children draw a standard hopscotch board on the sidewalk.
2. Fill the spaces in the hopscotch design with random letters instead of numbers.
3. Give each child a beanbag or small token.
4. Let the children take turns playing hopscotch. Encourage them to identify the letter upon which their tokens land.
5. Challenge the children to state two or three words that begin with the letter upon which the token lands.
6. For an extra challenge, fill the spaces of the hopscotch diagram with letters that, when put together, spell simple words such as "he," "she," "cat," "dog," and so on. Challenge the children to jump on the letters that spell out words in the correct order.
