paper (8 1/2 " x 11")

newspaper

crayons

pencil

fingerpaints

scale

Instructions

* Create ruled paper (1" width), 10 lines per sheet, with a margin. Turn the
page so that the lines run horizontally like an abacus. Make a copy of this
paper for each child in the classroom.
* Spread newspaper on the floor.
What to Do
1. Divide the children into
groups. Give each group one
bowl of paint (a different color
for each group). Distribute one
paper to each child. Ask the
children to dip their index
finger in the paint and make
10 circles on the first line, nine
circles on the second line, and
so on.
2. Later, ask the children to count
the total number of circles on each line and help them write the numbers
under each line.
3. Consider including a model for children who need one. If necessary, start with
five circles on a line instead of 10.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can the children count the number of lines on the page?
* Can the children identify the colors used in the exercise?
