Materials
Grocery ads from the local newspaper construction paper markers glue scissors
Instructions
1. Explain to the children that they are going to do an activity that focuses on vowels.
2. Discuss the different vowels and the sounds that each one makes.
3. Divide the children into groups of five. Distribute the grocery ads to the children's work stations.
4. Next, distribute five (six if you are teaching Y as a vowel) sheets of construction paper to each group of children. Ask them to print a different vowel on each sheet of paper.
5. Then, distribute the glue and scissors and demonstrate for the children how to cut out a picture from the grocery ads.
6. The group decides what vowel sound each item makes and then glues it to the appropriate vowel sheet. For example, an apple would make the short "a" sound, so the children would glue it on the vowel sheet titled "A."7. The children continue until they have found several pictures for each vowel sheet.
8. When the children are done with this part of the activity, gather them together and ask each group to share their findings. The children who are not sharing can check to make sure that the pictures were assigned to the correct vowel sheets.
9. Display the sheets throughout the classroom.
10. Do the same activity another day, but use initial consonants instead of vowels.
