A Chair for My Mother by Vera B. Williams
8 1/2 " x 11" paper in pink and white
photocopier
scissors
glue sticks
crayons
Instructions
1. During circle time, show the children a newspaper and point out the
different parts. Talk about newspaper jobs, such as editor, columnist, reporter,
sports writer, photographer, and so on.
2. Tell the children they are going to make their own class newspaper. Help
them pick a name and write it on a large piece of poster board.
3. Talk about newspaper articles. Explain that a good story needs to answer
these questions: who, what, when, where, why, and how (five "W's" and one
"H").
4. Show the children how editors lay out a newspaper page. Cut out pictures
and stories from a different newspaper and help the children put them
together.
5. Assign each child a job for the class newspaper. Help them think of
something they would like to write a story about. Remind them of the five
"W's" and one "H".
6. Use an instant camera and take pictures to go with the story.
7. Encourage the children to dictate and illustrate stories, if desired.
8. Cut out the stories and lay them out like a newspaper.
9. If desired, make copies on a photocopier and send them home each week.
10. Rotate jobs each week and set aside time for them to work on the class
paper each day.
