Note to parents

"100 Day Bank" made from a puppet theater or table

Uncirculated dollar bills and bank envelopes (one of each for each child)

A plastic jar "counter"

Instructions

* Send a note home asking parents to help their child save 100 pennies to bring
in on "100 Day."
* Arrange to get uncirculated dollar bills and envelopes from your bank.
* Set up the bank in a quiet area.
What to Do
1. Ask the children to count their pennies, then stack them by fives and then by
10s.
2. Ask a child to volunteer to be the "banker." Your banker needs a large plastic
container to hold the pennies and dollar bills and envelopes for exchange.
Write the child's name on the envelope.
3. Have the children take turns visiting the bank to exchange pennies for dollar
bills.
4. Engage the children in a discussion about the value of the 100 pennies and the
dollar bill. Talk to them about the similarities and differences of the two forms
of currency.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* Stress the importance of the child counting the pennies at home and putting
the pennies in stacks to count by fives and 10s.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can the children count to 100?
* Can the children sort the pennies by stacks of five and 10?
