Instructions

1. Encourage the children to create instruments using the materials that you wish
to recycle.
2. Children can place small items, such as beans, inside plastic containers to
make shakers. (NOTE: Know your group. You have to decide what small
objects are safe and which might not be.) Tape the tops to avoid spilling.
3. Show the children how to tape the paper towel tubes together for sound.
Tape or staple one end closed, put in some small objects, tape the other end
closed, and you have a shaker or rain stick.
4. The children can use boxes as drums or put rubber bands around them and
pluck the bands to make sounds.
5. Encourage the children to decorate the containers using markers, crayons,
and construction paper. On the cans with lids, measure paper for the children
to decorate and help them glue the paper to the can.
6. Play some fun music and encourage the children to use their "instruments" to
practice beat and rhythm. March like a band to music.
7. Have fun and let your imagination go. Pretty soon, everything around the
children could become an instrument.
More to do
Talk about what the instruments sound like. What sound does it make? Try to
come up with labels for the sounds. Compare the sounds to traditional musical
instruments.
