Materials

Clean, empty cans of different sizes (coffee, soup, vegetable) rubber bands in a variety of sizes (the bands found on leaf lettuce work great on the coffee cans)

Instructions

1. Put the cans and rubber bands in your music area. Encourage the children to experiment with the materials.

2. If necessary, guide them to stretch the bands completely around the can so that they stretch over the opening. Let the children find out what happens when they pull and release the rubber bands.

3. Tell them that if they hold the cans under their arms like a small drum, the sound is much louder.

4. Ask the children to sequence the cans according to pitch.
