Dirt coffee grounds large glass jar with lid hammer and nail night crawlers black construction paper tape

Instructions

1. Make your own Worm Farm in the classroom.

2. Mix dirt and coffee grounds together.

3. Fill the jar about 3/4 full with the dirt and coffee mixture.

4. Punch holes in the lid using a hammer and nail. The holes will allow the worms air and keep them from becoming too hot.

5. Purchase night crawlers from a local bait store. Night crawlers are bigger and easier to handle.

6. Put the worms in the jar, and replace the lid.

7. Cover the outside of the jar with black construction paper and tape it in place.

8. Place in a cool place or in the refrigerator.

9. Remove the paper the next day and observe how the worms tunneled into the soil.

10. Try placing different types of food on the soil to see what food the worms like; for example, cereal, rice, bread, fruits, lettuce, and so on.

11. Make sure to replace the construction paper after observing.
