Materials

Glue gun

Scoops of equal size from detergents or drink mixes

Container for water play (sink, tub, pan, water table, bucket, wading pool)Water

Instructions

Note: Step one should be done by an adult only.

1. Plug in glue gun. When it is hot, use it to melt holes into the sides and bottoms of the plasticscoops. Vary the size and the number of holes.

2. Place the scoops in the water play area.

3. While the children explore the scoops and the passing of water through them, ask them whythe water is not staying in the scoop (cup, glass, etc.). Which scoop held water the shortesttime? Which one let the water pass the fastest? Why does the water run out? Can you predictwhich of these will hold water the longest? Are all the scoops the same size? Do somehold more than others? Can you cover the holes so water does not run out? Measuring toolscould be added to the activity.
