Instructions

1. Pour whipping cream into a baby food jar, filling it 1/3 to 1/2 full.

2. Screw on the lid of the jar, making sure it is secured tightly.

3. Encourage the children to take turns shaking the jar. They can jump, dance, and shake to keep the jar moving. Two children can sit on a carpeted area and roll the jar back and forth to one another. Within ten to fifteen minutes, the whipping cream will separate.

4. Pour off the thin liquid into a bowl and encourage the children to taste it.

5. The remaining thick substance is the butter.

6. Put half of the butter into a bowl and mix in a pinch of salt. Encourage the children to do a taste test to see if they prefer the salted or unsalted butter. If desired, graph the results on a piece of chart paper.

7. Add yellow food coloring to a portion of the butter and have a new taste test. Again, if desired, chart the results.More to do:Discuss where milk comes from.
