Materials

flannel board or magnet boardpairs of objects represented by felt or magnetic pieces (two hearts, two triangles,two puppies, two circles)

Instructions

1. Place several pairs of felt pieces on the flannel board or magnets on the magnet board.

2. Point to each pair in turn and ask, "What are these?" "How many are there?"3. Let the children touch and count the items in each group to determine the answer.

4. Say, "Yes, there are two of each one. They are in groups of two."5. Ask the children to look at their own bodies to see what they have that comes in twos, such as arms, legs, eyes, and ears.

6. Ask the children to look around the room for other groups of two.

7. Mix up the flannel board items. Ask the children to sort through the items to find groups of two.

8. Leave the materials out for exploration during center time.More to do Transitions: When moving from one area to another, have the children move in groups of two. Ask them to find a friend with whom to walk. Say, "Now, we are moving two by two; we are moving in pairs."Music and Movement: While outside, sing "The Ants Go Marching" and have the children act out the verses by marching around the area in ones, twos, threes, and so on.
