Marterials

  • Empty baby wipe boxes, one for each child
  • permanent marker
  • stickers

What to do

1. At the end of the school year (or when a child moves up), give each child an empty baby wipe box to decorate. Using a permanent marker, write on the box "My (or child's name) Treasure Box."

2. At group time, tell the children they are going on a treasure hunt. Explain that anywhere in the room they see their own name tag (name-writing cards, birthday signs, cubby tags, photos, and so on), they should pick it up and put it in their box.

3. Ask them to collect other small belongings, such as toothbrushes. Tell them these are their treasures, and they are now theirs to take home.

Author Note: The first time I did this with my class, they had a ball. It took them about 20 minutes to look all around. They helped each other, and as an unanticipated bonus, they took out their names and counted them, lined them up, sorted them by type, and compared them with others. One little girl even stopped teachers in the hall to show them her treasure as she left for the day.
