Instructions

1. Cut out pictures of foods commonly found at the grocery store, such as ice
cream, celery, eggs, milk, bread, macaroni, fish, meat, and apples. Glue them
to oak tag strips and write the word for each food on the strip.
2. Review the names of the foods with the class.
3. Punch a hole on one end of each strip and place the entire collection on a
large loose-leaf ring. This allows children to fan out the items for easy
reading.
4. Keep this as a reference list in the housekeeping area.
5. Encourage the children to refer to the collection so they can make a
"shopping list" for a trip to the grocery center. They can write their chosen
items on pads of paper.
6. Encourage the children to plan a pretend meal and choose the foods they
need to buy at the grocery store.
