Materials

  1. Variety of fabrics and materials (such as felt, fur, feathers, and vinyl)
  2. Glue
  3. Oak tag pieces
  4. Hole punch
  5. Fasteners (brass brads or silver snap rings)
  6. Markers

Instructions

  1. Glue each piece of fabric to a piece of oak tag.
  2. Punch two or three holes along one side of each piece of oak tag and fasten them together to make a book.
  3. Write the name of the material on each page.
  4. Encourage the children to explore the touch and feel book.

Instructions

1. Choose an area for a beauty salon. Decorate with posters, photos, or pictures
of various types of hairstyles and old magazines and books from beauty
salons.
2. Set up a reception area in front of the hairdressing area. Arrange several
chairs and put out books and magazines. Place an appointment book or
calendar, pencil, keyboard, and telephone on a small desk or table to make a
reception desk.
3. Arrange chairs in the hairdressing area. Put out baskets or trays of small
combs and brushes, rollers, and barrettes. Add haircutter's drapes, hair dryers
(with cords removed), and small and large unbreakable mirrors. Choose a
variety of dolls with different types of hair for children to play with.
4. If desired, fill tubs with water for children to shampoo and rinse dolls' hair.
5. Explain to the children about the area. The dolls "wait" in the reception area,
the receptionist calls out names and makes appointments, and the
hairdressers pick up the dolls and style their hair.
6. Children may also escort and wait for dolls in the waiting area as though
they are the parents. If bringing in dolls from home, this will be more
important to children and they may want to be hairdresser as well.
