Instructions

What to do
1. Before class, trace and cut circles from the poster board, using the small plate as a template. Cut
small circles or "red spots" from the construction paper. Pour the corn syrup into a bowl.
2. Show the class a picture of Jupiter. Bring their attention to the big red spot and swirling storms
on its surface.
3. Help the children cover the poster board circle with corn syrup, using a brush.
4. When they are finished, have the children squeeze a drop or two of food dye, preferably two
colors, into the corn syrup and mix the colors gently with a toothpick. Have the children place a
red spot on their planet Jupiter. The corn syrup will hold it in place.
5. Let the project dry for a couple of days. If the project must go home before then, cover it with
plastic wrap and tape the wrap on the reverse side.
More to do
Movement: Play music and invite the children to move like a swirling storm or an angry red spot.
Snack: Bring in muffins, then squeeze a drop or two of food coloring in frosting and let the children
stir, making the colors swirl; frost the muffins and top each with a red cinnamon candy.
