Instructions

1. Explain to the children that they are going to color "dinosaur eggs."
2. Pour just enough vinegar into each bowl to cover the egg.
3. Add three to four drops of food coloring to each bowl of vinegar and stir.
4. Ask children to place the hard-boiled eggs into the colored vinegar and let
them soak. Use a spoon to pick up the egg and check its color. The longer the
egg stays in the bowl, the darker the color will be.
5. When satisfied with the color, take the egg out to dry.
6. Display the eggs in the room once daily for a few weeks. Let children handle
the eggs. During handling, the eggs may become cracked. If not, make a few
cracks yourself. Younger children will believe that a dinosaur is hatching!
7. When each egg is about to open up, paint dinosaur footprints the color of
the eggs. The children can celebrate the hatching of their dinosaur eggs!
More to do A great follow-up to this activity is to have a scavenger hunt for dinosaur toys,
so that children may find their "hatched dinosaurs!"
