Glass of water, one for each child

Straws

Instructions

1. Give each child a glass of water and a straw.

2. Ask the children to place their straws into the water, covering the top of it with their index fingers.

3. Show the children how to raise the straw just above the glass and lift their fingers from the straws so that the water rolls out into the glass.

4. Encourage the children to practice this while singing "The Eensy-Weensy Spider." The eensy weensy spider went up the waterspout. (Lift straw with finger covering the top.) Down came the rain and washed the spider out. (Remove finger from the straw.)Out came the sun and dried out all the rain,And the eensy-weensy spider went up the spout again.

5. Ask the children why they think the water stays in the straw when their fingers cover the tops. Explain how their fingers keep the air out and create suction. When they lift their fingers from the straws, the air flows in and releases the water.
