Instructions

1. At group or circle time, have the children take a look at the bottom of their
shoes and then put their feet out straight so they can see everyone's shoes.
2. Use this to transition gradually from group or circle to washing hands for
snack. Say, "If you have black on the bottom of your shoes, you can go wash
your hands for snack." Or, "If you have the number 1 on the bottom of your
shoe..." or "If you have a flower on the bottom of your shoe..."
3. Say silly things such as, "If you have played on the bottom of your shoes, you
can wash your hands for snack."
Author's Note: The children in my class are so used to this transition activity,
sometimes they sit down and start looking at the bottom of their shoes.
More to do Literacy: Create a class "Whose Shoes?" Take pictures of each child from the
knees down of their shoes. Make this into a book and guess whose shoes are
on each page. The next page could be a picture or name of child whose shoes
are on the previous page.
