Learn Every Day About Numbers

Materials

small paper cups (five per child)

jellybeans (five different colors; 15 jellybeans per child)

snack-size plastic baggies (one per child)

number flash cards

manipulatives, such as counters

Instructions

* Place 15 jelly beans in a baggie for each child. Make sure you have one of
one color, two of another color, and so on until you finish with five of another
color.
What to Do
1. Show the children flash cards with numbers 1 to 5, and identify each one. Use
manipulatives to coordinate with each number to show how many of
something each number represents.
2. Show each number (one at a time), and ask the children to identify them.
3. Distribute five cups, and one baggie with 15 jellybeans to each child.
4. Tell the children to sort the jellybeans according to their color, and put each
colored group in one of the cups, for example, all the pink jellybeans in
one cup.
5. After the children finish sorting the jelly beans, have them count each group in
each cup. Help them write that number on the cup with a marker. Continue
until they have counted all of the jelly beans and numbered all of their cups.
6. Ask the children to order the cups from 1 to 5. As a reward for their hard work,
the children can eat the jelly beans.
Safety Note: Before serving any food, check for allergies.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can the children identify numbers 1 to 5?
* Can the children count numbers 1 to 5 by counting jellybeans according to
their color?
* Did the children learn the sequence of numbers by putting the numbered
cups in the correct order?
