Instructions

1. Introduce a book by first showing the children a stick puppet of the main
character. Make a stick puppet of any main character in any book you
choose to read.
2. Before reading the book aloud (for example, Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for
Kindergarten), use a stick puppet to discuss what activities and experiences
Miss Bindergarten's students might encounter at school.
3. To make the stick puppet, enlarge a picture of the character using a color
copier.
4. Cut out the picture and glue it to oak tag or poster board.
5. Laminate for durability.
6. Attach a craft stick to the back of the picture using a hot glue gun (adult
only).
7. This idea really gets the children involved in the story. Place the book and
stick puppet in the Dramatic Play area or Reading area for repeated use.
Watch this favorite book character come to life with this imagination-inspiring
technique.
