Budding astronomer on your hands? Kids love to look up at the sky in wonder at the stars and planets. Unfortunately, thick clouds and late nights can make it difficult for your little learner to stargaze the way they want. Why not bring the stars to them? This simple craft activity allows you to make constellations that can be viewed any time of day, rain or shine!

Materials:

  • Book showing star constellations
  • Black construction paper
  • Nails and hammer
  • Elastic bands
  • Large juice cans with both ends removed and any rough edges covered with duct tape

What to Do:

  1. Hold the juice can down on the black paper and trace around its end.
  2. Using a book or guide, draw one of the constellation star patterns in the circle on the black paper.
  3. Using a nail and hammer, poke holes in the paper where the stars should be. Supervise closely.
  4. Put the black paper over the end of a can and hold it in place with an elastic band.
  5. Look up to the light and see the constellations!
