Any appropriate book, such as Ask Mr. Bear by Marjorie Flack

classroom materials to make simple props, optional

Instructions

1. This activity incorporates reading a story and giving children an opportunity
to role play the tale. It enables children to take small parts, work
cooperatively, and then see it all come together. It helps develop their
listening and speaking skills, and their imagination.
2. Read any appropriate book to the children. Ask Mr. Bear by Marjorie Flack is
a good one to use for this activity.
3. Assemble the children into small groups and let them choose roles. If you are
doing Ask Mr. Bear, you need a boy (or girl or both) and various animals such
as a chicken, goose, goat, sheep, cow, and bear.
4. Go through the story with the children, repeating the lines in the book or a
simple variation of them. (I am not advocating memorization!) Once they get
the general idea, they usually use the lines in the book or their own words.
Do not "rehearse" more than two or three times or it will become less
exciting to the children.
5. If desired, work with the children to make costumes and props for acting out
the story.
