Materials

  • Shallow dishes
  • White glue
  • Cotton string
  • Wax paper
  • Glitter, in gold, silver, red, green, or diamond colors
  • Scissors, optional
  • Hole punch

 

What to do

1. Pour glue into shallow dishes.

2. Give the children string and wax paper.

3. Show the children how to dip their string into the glue and make a design on the wax paper.

4. Encourage the children to sprinkle glitter onto their glue design.

5. Let dry overnight.

6. Help the children cut out the design, if desired.

7. Punch a hole with a paper punch into the top of the design. Tie a string through the hole to make an ornament.


More to do

  • Omit the string and make designs using glue in squeeze bottles. Sprinkle with glitter and let them dry. (Drying time takes longer than when using a string.)

1. Give each child a cap or visor.2. Put the paints in the middle of the work area. Encourage the children to usethe paints to decorate their caps or visors as desired.3. Let the caps or visors dry before wearing them.More to doField Trip: Make field trip caps by decorating the cap or visor as describedabove. Create a stencil that has a significant design (such as a schoolhouse, bus,or school emblem) and stencil it on the brim of the cap or visor. Ask the childrento wear the caps on field trips. Note: Do not display any personal information,such as the child's name, on the cap.Holidays: For Father's Day, make matching father/child caps. Purchase one adultand one child-sized cap or visor for each child. Ask the children to decorate thecaps as desired. Create a stencil that says "#1 DAD" and help the children usethe stencil on the brim of the adult caps after the other paints have dried. For anadded touch, create a stencil that says "#1 Son/Daughter" for the child's cap.
