Materials

  • magazines and catalogs
  • scissors
  • felt
  • rubber cement (adult only)
  • felt board
  • cassette tape and tape recorder (optional)

 

What to do

1. Help the children cut out pictures from magazines and catalogs of items that make sounds (such as a dishwasher, dog, and baby). Glue each picture to a piece of tagboard and print the sounds the item makes underneath.

2. Back the pictures with felt using rubber cement for later use on the felt board.

3. Cut the pictures apart to make two-piece puzzles (keep the picture on one piece and the sound on the other).

4. Put the pictures of the objects on half of the felt board and ask the children to identify the sound each one makes. As each sound is identified, place the sound piece of the puzzle next to the picture.

5. Put the puzzle pieces in the listening center with the felt board for use during free choice time. If desired, tape-record the sounds on a cassette tape for the children to use with the puzzles.

Instructions

1. Look at the pictures of shells and match actual shells to them by placing
them on the pictures.
2. Encourage the children to sort the shells into baskets by characteristics such
as shape (pointed, round, flat), color (pink, purple, black, brown, gray, white),
or pattern (solid, striped, or dotted).
3. Make counting strips by printing a numeral at the left side of each sentence
strip. Make an appropriate number of marks along the strip (for example, if
the number is three, make three marks). Cut off the strip at the end of the
marks. Laminate. Let the children place shells on the marks and count.
4. Place distinctly different shells (scallop, mussel, oyster, and conch) into a box.
Make a hole in the lid that is large enough to fit a hand through. Provide
pictures of each shell that is in the box. Encourage the children to reach into
the box, pick up a shell, feel it, and try to decide which shell it is by looking at
the pictures. Then let them remove the shell to see if it matches the picture
they chose.
