Activity Quick Finder:

Solomon Grundy

Sentence strips
pocket chart

1. Write each line of the Mother Goose verse, "Solomon Grundy" on separate sentence strips.

Solomon Grundy

Solomon Grundy
Born on a Monday,
Christened on Tuesday,
Married on Wednesday,
Took ill on Thursday,
Worse on Friday,
Died on Saturday,
Buried on Sunday,
This is the end
Of Solomon Grundy.

2. Laminate the strips for durability.
3. This can be done first as a whole group activity and then individually as reading skills improve. Pass out the sentence strips to different children in the group.
4. Enlist the children's help in finding which sentence strip comes next.
5. As you read aloud, track the text with your finger to help youngsters focus on individual words.
6. Put the sentence strips in your literacy center or near a pocket chart. Encourage the children to revisit the poem during free-choice time.
