Materials

paper plates

raisins

carrot slices

apple slices

melon slices

blueberries, strawberries, grapes

yellow or red pepper slices

pineapple chunks

crackers

Instructions

1. Place each different snack item on a separate paper plate. Depending on the
age of the children, you could have them count out the number of snack
items they need (according to the rhyme below) or you can preassemble the
items in a sandwich bag for each child.
2. Invite the children to recite the following rhyme:
Ten wrinkly raisins, brown or black.
Nine crisp pepper sticks make a stack.
Eight carrot coins of orange hue.
Seven round berries colored blue.
Six apple slices red and white.
Five pineapple chunks are a golden sight.
Four tumbling grapes rolling around.
Three cracker pieces make a crunchy sound.
Two red strawberries, not just one.
One melon slice, our snack making's done!
3. Eat the snack items, using simple addition. "One raisin and one carrot make
how many pieces in your hand?"
4. Since this may be too much food for the children eat, they may bring some of
it home with them to finish.
