Materials

rice cakes

spreadable topping such as peanut butter, softened cream cheese, or frosting

small edibles such as raisins, seeds, nuts, small fruit pieces

plastic butter knives

number chart showing numbers 1 to 10

Instructions

1. Invite the children to spread a topping on
their rice cakes.
2. Ask the children to select their
favorite number from the number
chart.
3. Encourage the children to use the
small edible pieces of fruit and nuts
to form the number on their rice
cakes.
Safety Note: Before serving any food,
especially nuts, check for allergies.
4. Invite each child to show and tell about
her snack, and then allow the children
to munch away on this fun snack.

* Use graham crackers in place of rice cakes for a less expensive treat.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can each child identify the numbers on the number chart?
* Provide each child with a plateful of small edibles. Can she form numbers by
arranging the edible snacks on her plate?
