Instructions

* Prepare an observation sheet. Include black-and-white pictures and names of
bugs common to your area.
* Separate the bugs into groups such as "flying bugs," "hopping bugs," and
"crawling bugs."
* Provide blank areas on the observation sheet where the children can draw
bugs they find that are not listed.
What to Do
1. Read a book about bugs to the children
(see list below for suggestions).
2. Discuss the characteristics of the bugs
mentioned in the books.
3. Hand out observation sheets and pencils.
Either hand out crayons or have them
accessible for the children during their safari.
4. Discuss any safety rules and boundaries that the
children must follow during the safari.
5. Take the children outside and let them explore.
6. Suggest that the children color the outline of the bugs on their observations
sheets when they identify them.
7. When the safari is finished, have the class talk about the bugs they saw.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* To add a math element, give each child a ruler and have them include
measurements for the bugs they find.

* Can the children identify common bugs?
