pictures of insects

Instructions

Poke holes in the lid of each spice jar.
What to Do
1. Have the children repeat each line of the following chant after you and move
like the insect. Explain that they will move like insects to learn a bit about the
insects they are searching for.

1. Familiarize themselves with insects. 3. Learn about the natural world.
2. Use their observational skills.

Songs, Poems, and Fingerplays
We're going on a bug hunt!
We're going to catch some big ones.
What a sunny day!
Are you ready? Okay!
Oh my! A bee!
A black and yellow bee,
Flying over the flowers.
Buzz, buzz, buzz.
We're going on a bug hunt!
We're going to catch some big ones.
What a sunny day!
Are you ready? Okay!
Oh, my! An ant!
A tiny, black ant,
Crawling through the grass.
Shh....
2. While on the bug hunt, take photos of the process of hunting for the bugs as
well as capturing them.
3. Use the magnifying glass to look at the bugs in their natural habitat as well as
in the spice jars.
4. Print out the photos you took, and write down what the children tell you
about each. Create a class book titled, "Our Bug Hunt."
5. Set the bugs free afterward.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Ask the children to describe the bug hunt in the correct sequence.
* Ask the children to describe the differences and similarities in the insects they
found on the hunt.
* Ask the children what they see in the printed photos and write down their
answers.
