Materials

colored construction paper

scissors (adult use only)

1 sheet of background paper (white or colored) for each child

glue

crayons and markers (optional)

Instructions

* Copy and tape animal pictures to sticks.
* Laminate a picture of a grandfather clock.
* Prepare a chart with the words to the song, or prepare words and animal
pictures for a pocket chart.
What to Do
1. Teach the children the following song, and then sing it together. Tell the
children that the animals will do tricks to fool them. Have the children act out
the movements matching the words. Use a variety of stick animals. Change the
animals after each verse.
Hickory, Tickery, Trick by Carol Hupp
(Tune: "Hickory, Dickory, Dock")
Hickory, tickery, trick,
A [cow, horse, pig, deer, wolf] ran [up, below, right, left, through] the clock.
(child moves the stick puppet to correct position)
The clock struck [9, 2, 6, or any number], (puppet jumps x times as children
count)
And the cow ran down.
Hickory, tickery, trick.
2. End with a Simon Says-type game to try to trick the children. For example, say,
"Simon Says the cow is in the middle of the clock. Simon says the cow is
below the clock."
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Do the children indicate an understanding of the position words?
* Can the children substitute animals and actions without difficulty?
