What to do
1. Write a number in the center of each plate. For younger children, draw a corresponding number
of circles on the plate.
2. Encourage younger children to color in the circles; invite older children to draw a picture showing
the correct number; for example, suggest that they draw three apples for the number 3.
3. When they finish, help the children punch holes around the edge of their plate.
4. Tie a piece of yarn to the first hole or tape it to the bottom of the plate. Help the children
thread their needle, if they are using one; if they are not using a needle, wrap a piece of tape
around the end of the yarn.
5. Show them how to weave the yarn through the openings. Tie a knot when they finish their border.
6. Invite the children to decorate their plates with markers or crayons.
More to do
Math: Arrange the plates in order while singing a counting song. Play a counting game with
books, blocks, plastic animals, or even the children's shoes; place the correct number of objects
next to each plate.
More art: Design a colorful number line for your bulletin board. Make movable cardboard or
paper figures in the shape of a number using paper fasteners.
Snack: Count the crackers on your plate, then subtract them as you eat them.
