Materials

Cardboard pieces, approximately 8" x 10" (20 cm x 25 cm)

Sponges, small

Water

Dry tempera paint, blue and green

Glue

Small shells, sand, bits of driftwood, pebbles from the beach

Instructions

What to do
1. Invite the children to dip a damp sponge in the dry tempera paints and gently paint the cardboard.
2. Let cardboard dry.
3. Encourage the children to select from the available shells, sand, driftwood, and pebbles that
they would like to use in their collage.
4. Demonstrate how to dribble glue on the cardboard, then press the natural materials into place.
5. Allow the collages to dry, and then shake off any excess sand.

Sand: Hide seashells and rocks in the sand table or sandbox.
Science: Have children bring in their special seashells or rocks to show to the class.
