Instructions

Read The Lorax by Dr. Seuss to the children. Allow the children to respond to
the information presented in the story and share observations they have made
about problems in their environment.
2. Take the children on a "pollution safari" in the neighborhood and help them
identify local issues. If you have a digital camera, use it to record the problems
the children identify as they walk. Use these photos to help the children
remember what they saw on the walk, and for strengthening literacy skills if
combined with related vocabulary/print such as in an experience chart.
3. Read Sammy & Sue Go Green Too by Suzanne Corso. Talk about the story.
Discuss the issues and help the children relate them to their own lives.
4. Ask each child to choose one way she can help make our Earth a more
beautiful place. Then ask each child to draw a picture and write a statement at
the bottom of the picture (or take dictation from the child and record it for
them).
5. Photocopy the pictures and guide the children to collate and staple the class
pictures together to create a "Save Our Planet Earth" book to share with their
families or other classes.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children identify problems on the pollution safari?
* Do the children's illustrations indicate an understanding of how to care for
the Earth?
