Rock collection with rocks of varying sizes Balance scale

Large piece of white paper

Instructions

1. Set out the rocks, the scale and the paper.

2. Let the children sit around the table so that every one can see the rocks and the paper.

3. Have a child choose a large rock and place it on the scale.

4. Ask the children how many smaller rocks they think it will take to lift the large rock.

5. List the children's responses on the paper.
