Instructions

1. Let each child choose a musical instrument. If you don't have enough for everyone, use blocks to slide or tap together.

2. At group time, have the children practice repeating a simple rhythm pattern that you play on an instrument or clap using your hands.

3. When they are able to repeat the rhythm, begin your rhythm train!4. Start by leading and asking a few children to jump on your train. Go around the room playing a simple rhythm pattern with your instrument and have the children repeat after you as your train chugs along. Gradually invite more and more children to hop on the rhythm train until everyone is aboard and repeating your simple rhythms.

5. Give each child a turn leading the train and creating a rhythm to be repeated.

6. As the group gets better at repeating the rhythms, let the train move to the rhythm as well. Do this by having the children stomp their feet to the beat as they go.
