Materials

Materials to make a variety of instruments: Lumi sticks (dowels cut into 1' lengths, sandpaper, paint and brushes) drums (round oatmeal boxes, sticky-sided decorative paper,) shakers (empty film canisters, dry rice or pebbles, tape) sand blocks (sandpaper, glue, small blocks of wood) CD of marching music CD player

Instructions

1. Hold a music night or afternoon and invite parents and children to come to school to make instruments. Set up tables so that each parent and child can make instruments.

2. To make Lumi Sticks, sand the ends of dowels and paint them.

3. To make drums, turn the oatmeal boxes upside down and cover the outside with sticky paper. Use dowels for drumsticks.

4. Make shakers by putting rice or pebbles into film canisters and taping them shut.

5. Use wood glue to attach sandpaper to wooden blocks.

6. Let the children figure out how to play the instruments. They will need two of the dowels, shakers, and sand blocks.

7. Demonstrate how to keep rhythm. Put on some brisk music and have a parade around your room.
