Instructions

l Make one large cat die-cut in each of the following colors: red, blue, yellow,
purple, orange, white, brown, green, pink, and black. Cut out a 4" x 6"
squares for each color. Staple the squares to the back of each cat to make a
pocket.
l Write the color name on the large cat in black marker.
l Make two to four small die-cut cats per color and laminate for durability.
l Gather magazines and scissors.
What to Do
1. Read Cat's Colors by Jane Cabrera.
2. Give each child a small die-cut cat.
3. Once you have given all the children a color, ask them to find the other
children with the same cat color.
4. After children have found their group, give them their large cat. Inform them
that they will be finding their cat's favorite color things. In other words, they
will be looking for things in the magazine that are the color of their cat.
5. Give children time to find at least five pictures and place them in the pocket of
their cat.
6. Once everyone has done this, regroup and share the color of their cat and the
things that they found.
7. Gather pictures and color cats and display them on the class bulletin board by
color groups.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children match color words to color samples?
l Provide a group of objects of different colors and ask the children to name the
color of each object. Can they sort the objects by color?
