Materials

Scissors16-ounce (500 ml) plastic cup, one for each child

Plastic straws

Two pieces of construction paper, sizes 2" x 4" and 2" x 2" (5 cm x 10 cm and 5 cm x 5 cm)

Instructions

1. Use pointed scissors to poke a hole in the middle of the bottom of the plastic cup. Make sure that a straw can slide easily through the hole.

2. Children cut the 2" x 2" square from corner to corner to create two triangles. Glue one triangle to one of the 2" sides of the rectangle to create the top of the rocket. Let the children cut the remaining triangle in half to create two smaller triangles. Glue the two triangles to the opposite end for the tail of the rocket. Tape the rocket to the straw, leaving about four inches of straw at the bottom.

3. Place the bottom of the straw inside the cup and poke it down through the hole.

4. Children pull the straw down until the rocket disappears into the cup. Have a countdown and pop up the rockets when blast-off occurs.
