Instructions

Place the paper, crayons, and pencils on the tables.
What to Do
1. Sit in a circle and show the children pictures of birds in a bird book or bird
magazine.
2. Talk with the children about the birds in your area. Have the children seen
birds in their backyard? Encourage them to talk about this. What colors are
the birds? Have they seen any nests? Do they understand that in other
neighborhoods there may be different kinds of birds?
3. Suggest that each child draw a bird.
4. Hang the pictures on the wall for everyone to see.
Poem
Little Bird by Shirley Anne Ramaley
Oh, little bird, so high in the tree! (raise arms up high)
I'm looking at you; do you see me? (point up high, then back at self)
Soon you will fly, up into the sky. (make flying motions with arms)
I want to go with you, so far and so high. (reach way up high)
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Ask the children to tell about the birds they have seen. Do the children
understand that different areas of the country, and the world, have different
kinds of birds?
* Are the children able to name one or two birds that live in the neighborhood?
