Instructions

* Put on the animal print garment and place the fabric swatch in the pocket.
* Print one of the following words pets, water, wild, farm on each sheet of
paper and draw a picture to correspond to the word. Display the papers in
the center of the circle.
What to Do
1. Have the children sit in a circle.
2. Give each child a beanbag animal and have the children pass their animals
around the circle.
3. Walk around the circle and drop a piece of "animal fabric" in front of a child.
The children stop passing their animals.
4. Invite that child to identify his animal, stand up and role-play how the animal
would move about, and make any noises the animal would make (flap its
wings and say "caw, caw;" slither across the floor and hiss.)
5. Invite that child to place his toy animal on the sheet of paper according to its
category (pet, water animal, wild animal, farm animal) and explaining how he
would classify his animal.
6. Have that child step out of the circle and spend the rest of the time imitating
each "animal dance" that his classmates perform.
7. Have the children pass their animals around the circle until you drop the
fabric a second time. Repeat this activity until all the animals have been sorted
into groups and each child has had a turn.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* When shown an image of an animal, can the children do an "animal dance"
that replicates the creature's movements?
* Can the children identify various animals by name?
