Instructions

1. Without the children seeing, put the object into a box and put the lid on.
2. If desired, wrap the box like a gift and tie a ribbon around it.
3. Sit in a circle on the floor with the box in the center.
4. Ask the children questions about what could be in the box. For example,
"Could it be a dog? Why not?" (Too big. Accept other reasons: dog would
need air, dog would bark, and so on.)
5. Continue asking if it could be other objects, some small enough, some too
large.
6. Finally, give clues to let the children guess the identity of the object. For
example, "It's something you play with," "It looks like a real baby," "You build
with it," or "It's made of wood."
7. Open the box and encourage the children to examine the object.
More to do
Vary the size of the box and its contents.
Science and Nature: Relate the object to science by using a seashell, leaf,
pinecone, rock, or other natural object.
