Instructions

1. This activity gives children practice reading numbers and counting sets to
match the numerals. The children practice one-to-one correspondence by
matching the pizza ingredients to the pictures on the recipe cards.
2. Prior to presenting the center, cut out the felt to resemble toppings on a
pizza. Cut a medium brown circle for the crust, a smaller red circle for the
sauce, green heart shapes for the peppers, black ovals for the black olives,
small pink circles for the pepperoni, yellow rectangles for the cheese, and
brown peg shapes for the mushrooms.
3. Create recipe cards using index cards and markers. On each card, draw a
picture of an ingredient and the number children should add to the pizza.
For example, for one pizza crust, draw one brown circle and write "1 pizza
crust" underneath. For eight peppers, draw eight green heart shapes and
write "8 peppers" underneath. Make at least 9 to 10 different cards. Laminate
for durability.
4. Ask each child to select a recipe card.
5. Encourage them to count out the number of each pizza topping they need.
Explain that they can double check by matching their felt shapes to the
drawn shapes on the card (one-to-one correspondence).
More to do Art: Provide paper plates and markers. Let children use markers to create their
own pizza drawing. Provide yellow yarn for them to glue on top.
Snack: Provide round crackers and pizza sauce. Let children add sauce on top
of their crackers and top with different ingredients, including cheese,
pepperoni, mushrooms, and so on.
