Materials

large paper or cardboardempty egg cartons, cereal boxes, and so onmarkers and/or paintsglue and tapewooden clothespins, pipe cleaners, scraps of material, cotton balls, or other interesting objectsblank stickerstoy cars, plastic trees (for more fun, use grass, sand, shells, and so on)

Instructions

1. Place the large paper or cardboard on the floor.

2. Mark roads, parks, beaches, and other landmarks on the paper.

3. Help the children make items such as buses, houses, buildings, trees, playground equipment, and so on using egg cartons or cereal boxes and paint.

4. After the children paint the items, allow them to dry.

5. Help the children glue or tape each item in place on the cardboard.

6. Invite them to make people using clothespins, with pipe cleaners for arms and legs, and material for clothes.

7. Provide blank stickers for children to mark numerals on houses, buses, stores, and so on.

8. As you and the children make the Number City, ask some of the following questions:* How should street addresses be arranged?* How many floors are in the high-rise building?* How many people live in each house?* How many wheels are on the bus?* How far is the bus from the beach?* How many swings are on the playground?
